Released on 26 March 2021 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Core Black/Cream White/Green. Brown croc is the Wales Bonner Samba at its most deliberately unathletic. adidas invented the modern fashion designer sneaker partnership, running from Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 line and Stella McCartney in 2004 through Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang, and the Wales Bonner chapter has been the one that treats the Samba as tailoring rather than as sportswear. The base shoe was built for footballers training on frozen ground, which produced a slim last, a flat sole and direct ground feel. Putting a crocodile textured brown leather on that pattern collapses the distance between a training shoe and a dress shoe, and does it without changing a single proportion of the silhouette.
Brown croc wants tailoring, not sportswear. Recipe one: chocolate or stone wool trousers with a cream knit and a camel coat, treating the shoe as you would a loafer and matching the leather tone rather than contrasting it. Recipe two: dark selvedge denim with a navy blazer and a white shirt, where the texture reads as intent instead of accident. Samba lasts are narrow and long, so a half size down suits slim feet and the leather widens with wear. Keep these off wet streets, since embossed grain traps water in the pattern. Brush the grain out with a soft horsehair brush, use a colourless conditioner sparingly, and never a tinted polish, which fills the texture and flattens it.
The Samba became a fashion object because ordinary people wore it first and the industry followed, which is the pattern behind every adidas crossover. Run-DMC wrote My Adidas unpaid, held shell toes up in front of a Madison Square Garden crowd with adidas executive Angelo Anastasio in the audience, and the deal that followed was the first between a musical act and an athletic company, a moment Questlove has called hip hop's tipping point. The Superstar and the Stan Smith did the same for terrace and casual dressing. Designer Sambas exist because that base layer became too culturally valuable for fashion to ignore, and croc leather is the most explicit way to say so.
The Samba structure survives intact: a leather upper, a T shaped toe overlay in the highest wear zone, Three Stripes stitched through the sidewall where they reinforce the panel as well as brand it, and a gum rubber outsole with almost no stack height. The stripes have carried that load since the mark was bought from Karhu Sports in 1952 rather than drawn in house. What changes is the hide. An embossed crocodile grain has depth and shadow that flat leather does not, so the shoe catches light along the panel curves and the toe box. That texture also hides light scuffing well while showing deep creases more sharply. Expect the brown to darken and deepen with conditioning rather than to fade.
