Culture Note™
Released on 24 October 2024 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Collegiate Navy/Wonder White/Night Red. This is the Samba treated as a luxury object rather than as sports equipment, built with Wales Bonner and finished in navy with a crocodile embossed texture. adidas invented the modern designer sneaker partnership, starting with Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 line and Stella McCartney from 2004, then Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang, so a fashion house reworking an archive silhouette is native territory for the company rather than a stretch. What makes this version work is restraint: the shape is untouched, the palette is a deep navy, and the only intervention is a surface texture that changes how light moves across a shoe everyone already recognises.
First recipe: wide navy or charcoal wool trousers with a cream knit, where the croc texture is the only detail doing any talking. Second: black tailored trousers with a white shirt worn open, using the shoe to keep a smart outfit from tipping formal. It works for dinners, evenings, offices with a relaxed code and travel where you want one shoe that covers everything. Samba lasts are narrow and low, so consider half a size up for a broad foot. Wipe dust out of the emboss regularly, use a leather conditioner sparingly, and store them stuffed and boxed so the texture is not crushed.
The designer collaboration is now the standard way heritage silhouettes stay culturally live, and adidas holds the deepest history in it. The Samba is a good test case because it needs nothing: it became the base layer of European terrace and casual dressing without a single celebrity attached to it. Reworking it in a luxury material is therefore an argument about taste rather than about hype, and it appeals to buyers who already own several plain pairs and want the version that reads at dinner rather than at a match.
Croc embossing is a pressed texture, and it does two useful things on a low profile trainer. It breaks up the large flat panels of the Samba upper, and it makes a navy shoe read as three or four tones depending on the light. The Three Stripes stay where they have always been, stitched across the midfoot as reinforcement, a structural role they have carried since adidas bought the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952. Embossed leather needs different care from suede or smooth leather: dust settles in the pattern, so brush with a soft brush rather than wiping, condition lightly to stop the raised grain from drying out, and keep them away from prolonged wet.
