Culture Note™
Released on 9 June 2023 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a patent leather upper in Silver Metallic/Cream White/Grey One. adidas effectively invented the modern fashion designer sneaker partnership, beginning with Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 line and Stella McCartney in 2004 and continuing through Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang. The Wales Bonner work on the Samba belongs to that tradition and is one of its most successful chapters, because the designer treated the shoe as a garment rather than as a canvas. The Samba itself was built for footballers training on frozen ground, which gave it a slim last, a flat sole and direct ground feel. A silver execution takes that plain functional shape and finishes it in metallic, which is the least sporting thing you can do to a training shoe and precisely why it works.
Silver is a neutral if you treat it as one. Recipe one: charcoal wide leg trousers with a black knit, where the metallic reads as a highlight against a full grey and black column. Recipe two: cream or ecru wide denim with a navy blazer, so the shoe sits between the warm trousers and the cool jacket and ties them. The Samba last runs narrow and long, so a half size down suits slim feet. Keep these off wet streets, because a metallic finish spots permanently. Wipe rather than scrub, use a soft dry cloth on the upper, and never apply a solvent based cleaner or a coloured polish, both of which strip the finish and cannot be repaired.
The Samba's second life was created by wearers rather than by campaigns, which is how adidas has always worked. Run-DMC wrote My Adidas unpaid and had a Madison Square Garden crowd hold their shell toes in the air before any deal existed, producing the first endorsement between a musical act and an athletic company, a moment Questlove called hip hop's tipping point. The Superstar and the Stan Smith became the base layer of European terrace and casual dressing on the same logic. Designer Sambas are what happens when that base layer becomes valuable enough that fashion houses want to write on it, and a metallic pair is the loudest available version.
The Samba base is leather upper, suede T shaped toe overlay for abrasion resistance, Three Stripes stitched through the sidewall where they reinforce the panels as well as brand them, and a gum rubber outsole with almost no stack height. adidas has used the stripes structurally since buying the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952. Wales Bonner versions typically change the materials, the finishing and the lace treatment rather than the last, so the fit stays familiar. A silver metallic upper behaves differently from plain leather: it creases along flex lines and the finish burnishes at the toe and the ball of the foot, so the shoe develops visible wear patterns faster and more attractively than a standard pair.
