    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 January 2014 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has the Black/White/Game Royal/Metallic Platinum colourway. Game Royal is one of the oldest blues in the line, and pairing it with black and metallic platinum on a Low is the modern way of using a founding colour without pretending to be a reissue. The Air Jordan 1 predates every piece of technology the series is known for: Nike Air cushioning only entered the line from the Air Jordan II, elephant print arrived on the III, patent leather on the XI, and later models added carbon fibre shank plates, Kevlar on the XV, Flyknit from the XXX and a laceless FastFit system on the XXXIII. The 1 has none of that. It has a shape, and it never needed more.
Two recipes. Clean and dark: black jeans, a black or charcoal crew, and the platinum catching light as the only detail. Or lift it: mid grey trousers with a royal blue knit, which pulls the accent colour up to eye level and makes the shoe look intentional rather than incidental. Blacks with metallic trim suit evening better than daylight. Keep the hem cropped for a Low. Sizing is close to true. Dust the metallic areas with a dry cloth first, condition the black leather every few months, and avoid harsh cleaners that will strip the platinum finish faster than the leather beneath it.
Michael Jordan is the founding signature athlete and namesake, signed on 26 October 1984, and unusually for the time his deal carried a royalty on sales, which still pays: a reported 150 to 256 million dollars in a single recent year against Jordan Brand revenue of roughly 5.1 billion dollars for Nike. That arrangement is the most consequential thing about the line after the shoes themselves, because it made an athlete an owner of his own market rather than an endorser of somebody else's. A royal blue accent on a black Low is a small nod to the era when all of that was still just a contract nobody had tested.
Black leather panels with game royal placed on the Swoosh and collar and metallic platinum used as the highlight, all on the low cut version of the original pattern. Metallic accents against black are the easiest contrast this shoe can carry, since the platinum reads as hardware rather than colour. The build is stitched and cemented rubber under flat leather panels, the plainest construction in the entire signature line, and that plainness is the reason the model outlasted every technical shoe that came after it. Black hides creasing well, while the platinum sections will dull first where the foot flexes.
