Dark Teal is a deep blue green, the kind of colour that looks black indoors and reveals itself outside, and it lands on the Air Jordan 1 Low, the cut that has become the default way people actually wear this shoe. The pattern is the one Peter Moore designed with Bruce Kilgore for a Chicago Bulls rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984 for six years and 2.5 million dollars with royalties attached, released to the public on 1 April 1985. Teal has no place in the Chicago palette or in any Jordan Brand college programme, which is exactly why it works: the Low is where the silhouette gets to be a shape rather than a symbol.
Two fits. Dark and easy: black or charcoal trousers, a black tee, and a grey jacket, where the teal only shows itself in daylight. Or lift the contrast: cream chinos with a white tee and a tan overshirt, so the deep green blue anchors a warm palette. Lows want no visible sock and sit fine under a full length hem, which makes them the easiest Air Jordan 1 to wear to work. Take your usual size: the toe box is generous and the midfoot holds tight. Keep the midsole clean with a soft brush and mild soap, and condition the leather occasionally so the crease stays soft.
Colours like this exist because Jordan Brand stopped being a single basketball model. Set up as a standalone Nike division in 1997, it built its own athlete roster, apparel line and collaboration programme, moved outside basketball to the Michigan Wolverines football team in 2016 and Paris Saint Germain in 2018, and was generating about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike by 2022. A dark teal Low is what that independence looks like at retail: no team, no anniversary, no story, just the most recognisable sneaker outline in the world in a colour chosen because it looks good with clothes.
Leather upper cut below the ankle bone, with the perforated toe box, mudguard, eyestay and heel counter panels over a rubber cupsole carrying the concentric pivot circle. A deep saturated colour behaves like a dark neutral in daily use: it hides scuffing, keeps crease lines low contrast, and does not suffer dye transfer from denim. That leaves the white midsole and any white panels as the surfaces that decide whether the pair reads fresh, and against a dark teal the contrast is high enough that a dull sole is instantly visible. Brush the midsole regularly and wipe the upper with a damp cloth rather than soaking it.
