Designed by Peter Moore and released on 28 June 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a canvas upper in Team Gold/Sail. Team Gold is a sports colour rather than a fashion one, and on a low cut Air Jordan 1 it reads like a uniform pulled off its team. Jordan Brand supplies college programmes including North Carolina, Georgetown, Cincinnati and Michigan, so gold is not a decorative choice inside this catalogue, it is an institutional one. The 1 itself has been the same shape since Peter Moore designed it with Bruce Kilgore, a shoe that sold out its first 50,000 pairs and passed 150 million dollars against a Nike target of three million over three years. Cut low and given a saturated gold, it becomes a shoe that carries the collegiate association without belonging to any particular school.
Two recipes. First, indigo denim with a plain white tee, a high contrast pairing where gold against blue does most of the work and nothing else needs to be loud. Second, all black, trousers and knit, where the shoe is the only colour anywhere and the effect is deliberate rather than accidental. Lows want no show socks and a hem clear of the ankle. Size true to length. Protect the upper before first wear, clean marks the same day, keep it away from oil and grease which stain gold permanently, and and dry it slowly at room temperature rather than anywhere near a radiator or a hot car window.
The college side of Jordan Brand is the part that connects back to Jordan's own history at North Carolina, and it is why team colours carry weight in this catalogue rather than reading as arbitrary. The brand became a Nike division in 1997 and reached about 5.1 billion dollars by 2022, with sponsorship reaching well outside basketball into the Michigan Wolverines football programme and Paris Saint-Germain. A bold institutional colour on the most famous silhouette in sneakers is Jordan Brand using the equity in both directions: the shoe borrows credibility from the sport, and the sport borrows recognition from the shoe.
Removing the collar changes the fit of the 1 more than people expect. The heel sits lower, the toe flexes further and the lacing has less range to accommodate foot width, so a low is generally the friendlier cut for a broad forefoot. Nike Air cushioning has been in the line since the second model. Saturated yellows and golds are among the hardest dyes to maintain: they fade faster than reds or blues under UV, and aggressive cleaning lifts colour rather than dirt. Never use bleach or an abrasive eraser on a gold upper. Brush first, spot clean with mild soap on a barely damp cloth, and store the pair away from windows and direct light.
