Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 17 August 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has the Black/Black/Black colourway. Triple Black is the Air Jordan 1 with the argument removed. The shoe was designed by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore, released to the public on 1 April 1985, and built its early reputation on colour: red, black and white functioning as brand colours in their own right, loud enough that Nike could build an entire campaign around a uniform rule and pay the fines rather than change the shoe. Strip all three back to one and the silhouette has to survive on geometry. On the Low cut it does, because the wing shaped eyestay and the long quarter panel still catch light at different angles. This is the version that goes anywhere without explaining itself, the blackout of a shoe that spent its youth being the opposite.
Two easy runs. All black tailoring, a black overshirt and black trousers with a slight break, where the shoe closes the column and nothing interrupts the line. Or the contrast play: cream trousers or off white denim with a black knit, so the shoe anchors the bottom of a light outfit. It works for evenings, travel days and anywhere a white midsole would be a liability. Fit is true to length with a snug midfoot that eases as the leather gives. Care is simple but not zero: brush dust off before it dulls the finish, avoid harsh cleaners that lift the dye, and let wet pairs dry away from heat so the leather does not stiffen.
Blackout Jordans are what the silhouette became once it left the court entirely. The Air Jordan 1 turned sneaker collecting into a mass activity, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the resale market around them valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, but the everyday consequence was different: the shape entered normal wardrobes. Rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z had already written Jordans into the language of the music, so the outline needs no colour to be read correctly. Triple Black is the shoe operating on recognition alone, which is the strongest position a design can be in.
One colour across every panel means the seams and the material finish become the entire design. Leather in a single black takes light unevenly across the toe, quarter and collar, and that variation is the shoe. The toe perforations read as texture rather than a functional detail at this distance. Underneath, a foam midsole sits over a black rubber outsole, so there is no white break between upper and ground and the shoe visually lowers your foot. Practically, black hides road dust better than any other Jordan colourway but shows salt marks and dry scuffs more clearly. Feed the leather occasionally so it stays deep black instead of drifting grey at the crease points.
