Designed by Peter Moore and released on 7 October 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/White Onyx/White/Sail. Most Jordan releases ask to be preserved. The Wear Away idea asks the opposite: the upper is finished so that the outer surface abrades with use and reveals a second colour underneath, which means the shoe is only finished once you have worn it. Taxi, style code DQ8422 001, sets that reveal in the black and yellow language the brand has used for decades. On the low cut, where the panels are large and flat, the erosion is easy to see and easy to direct. It is an honest counterweight to a collecting culture that this line invented, a pair designed to be used rather than boxed.
Black and yellow is graphic, so use denim and workwear rather than tailoring. Try loose carpenter jeans with a hammer loop, a black hoodie and a yellow-free jacket so the shoe holds the only high-visibility colour. For a cleaner take, grey sweatpants with a white tee and a black overshirt lets the reveal show without competition. Low tops want a sock with heel grip. Wear these on real ground: pavement and skate-adjacent use is what produces the pattern. Brush lightly with a soft brush if you want to accelerate the reveal evenly, avoid heavy cleaners that strip the top layer in patches, and never machine wash.
Jordan Brand has never been shy about the shoes carrying wear as meaning. The line's own history contains a documented warning about age: polyurethane midsoles degrade by hydrolysis, and Nike has not published which PU it uses, so old pairs are not automatically wearable. A shoe built to change with use sits pointedly against that. The cultural backdrop is the collision of basketball and hip hop, Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising with Lee playing Mars Blackmon, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing Jordan and his sneakers, which is what made these shoes objects worth ageing in the first place.
The mechanic is a top layer over a contrasting under-layer, so scuffing, brushing and flexing at the toe and quarter gradually expose the colour beneath. Where you walk, how you crease and whether you brush the panels all change the result, which is why no two pairs finish the same. Beneath it sits the usual low build: quarter panel lockdown through the laces, rubber cupsole, stitched sidewall. Style code DQ8422 001 confirms the release. Do not protect this upper with a heavy coating, since that fights the entire design, and do not scrub randomly unless you want an uneven reveal. Wear it and let the abrasion follow your gait.
