Designed by Peter Moore and released on 11 May 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has the Barely Rose/White/Black colourway. Barely Rose is a colour that admits it is barely there, a soft pink that shows up as almost neutral in daylight and only reads as pink beside white. On the Air Jordan 1 Mid it is a deliberate step away from the palette this brand built its name on, where red, black and white function as house colours. The silhouette underneath is Peter Moore's work with Bruce Kilgore, the shoe whose first 50,000 pairs sold out and which passed 150 million dollars in sales against a Nike target of about 3 million dollars over three years. This is that shape used as a canvas for a colour with no basketball association whatsoever.
Soft pink works best with tones near it rather than against it. First: cream or oatmeal wide leg trousers with a white tee and a camel coat, an outfit where the shoe is one shade in a tonal set. Second: grey sweatpants with a white hoodie, where the pink reads as a warm accent in a cool outfit. Mids want a single cuff to show the collar. Avoid wet weather entirely, since water marks are highly visible on pale finishes and often permanent. Brush before every wear, clean lightly and often, dry away from sun and heat, and store them boxed to keep the tone even.
Colourways like this exist because the shape no longer needs to argue for itself. The 1 earned its position through the Banned advertising, built on the NBA's requirement that shoes be at least 51 percent white and Nike's willingness to pay a 5,000 dollar per game fine, and through hip hop, where 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put Jordan and his sneakers into their records. Once a silhouette is that established it can go anywhere, which is why Jordan Brand has taken it to Dior, Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Comme des Garcons and KAWS. A pastel Mid is the same freedom used quietly.
Soft pastels are the least forgiving finish on a leather sneaker. Every scuff shows, dirt reads as a grey shadow rather than a mark, and any cleaner that is too strong will lift the tone unevenly and leave you with a patch. Treat this as a shoe to protect first and wear second: protector spray before the first outing, and cleaning the same day anything lands.
