Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 January 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Royal Blue/White/Black. Black and hyper royal is one of the oldest ideas the Air Jordan 1 carries: a strong blue against black, high contrast, no white doing the heavy lifting. On the Mid, the cut that keeps the original silhouette in constant circulation, that pairing turns into an everyday shoe rather than a collector target. Jordan Brand has run as a standalone division inside Nike since 1997, with its own roster, apparel and collaborations, and the Mid is the workhorse that division uses to keep the 1's shape available in dozens of palettes each year. This one leans dark and saturated, which is why it wears far better in winter than most of the model's brighter colourways.
Blue on black wants cold weather dressing. Black jeans, a navy or charcoal hoodie and a black jacket keeps everything dark and lets the royal panels be the only lift. For a sharper look, grey wool trousers with a black crew neck makes the blue read as deliberate rather than sporty. Avoid mid blue denim, which competes directly with the overlay colour. The Mid works with cuffed hems and takes a thicker sock well, which helps in winter. Brush off dust regularly, use foam cleaner sparingly on the blue so it does not lighten, and treat the black leather occasionally to stop cracking at the toe crease.
The scale of what that 1984 signing became is hard to overstate: Jordan Brand generated about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike in 2022, with a reported 150 to 256 million dollars flowing to Jordan himself under the royalty arrangement written into the original six year, 2.5 million dollar deal. Nike's initial target for the line was around 3 million dollars over three years. The Mid is where that business meets the street, the version of the shoe that reaches the most feet at the most accessible price, and colourways like black and royal are the reason the silhouette still reads as a default rather than as a special occasion.
Black leather takes the base with hyper royal on the overlays and Swoosh, a two colour block that follows the panel seams of the original layout. The mid cut adds a padded collar without the full height of a High, which is the practical reason this cut sells: ankle support and easier entry. The Jumpman handles branding on the tongue area rather than the Wings mark of the earliest era. Style code 554724 068, which is the base code the Mid programme has used across many colourways. No material weights or stack heights are published. Dark uppers hide dirt but show dust, so a dry brush does more for this pair than a wet clean.
