Designed by Peter Moore and released on 9 September 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has the White/Gym Red/Black colourway. Chicago is the founding palette. Nike signed a Bulls rookie on 26 October 1984, the first shoe was produced for him that November and reached the public the following April, and the red, black and white it wore became brand colours in their own right rather than just team colours. The Mid sits between the High that Peter Moore drew and the Low the brand sells today, a cut that gives you the collar without the full commitment. Chicago is a statement palette, so let it be the only one. Recipe one: black straight leg denim, a plain white tee, a black jacket, the classic frame that has worked for this colourway since the beginning. Recipe two: grey sweat trousers, a white hoodie, no other red anywhere, which keeps a loud shoe from becoming a costume. Never add a second red garment. Best for dry weather, evenings and weekends. Size true, lace fully if you want the Mid collar to support you, and be quick with cleaning. Condition the leather so it creases softly, and store away from sunlight so the white does not go yellow.
This palette carries the brand's founding argument. The league's uniform policy required shoes to be at least fifty one percent white, the shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Michael Jordan wore before the Air Jordan I released, and Nike paid a five thousand dollar per game fine and built the Banned advertising around it, teaching the sneaker market that transgression sells. Spike Lee directed the earliest campaigns and played Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan. Rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z carried it further. Michael Jordan remains the founding signature athlete and namesake.
Red and white panels with black accents make the 1's block layout completely legible, which is why this colourway has survived every reissue: nothing is hidden. The Wings logo sits at the collar as it has since the earliest era, and Nike Air cushioning, in the line from the Air Jordan II, sits below. The Mid's collar height means you can wear it laced full for support or looser for shape without the shoe collapsing. Care follows the white: protect before first wear, use a foam cleaner and a white cloth on the midsole and white panels, and clean promptly, because red dye and street grime both settle into white stitching if left.
