Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 January 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Lobster/Dune Red/Sail/Vachetta Tan. White with dune and red is a heritage palette softened at the edges: keep the red, replace the hard black with a warm sand, and the Air Jordan 1 stops shouting and starts talking. That is what SE builds are for. The house mark that sits on this shoe has its own story: the Jumpman is a silhouette of Jordan mid leap with legs split, and Peter Moore had him recreate that pose in Bulls gear after seeing a photograph by Jacobus Rentmeester. Rentmeester sued Nike over it in 2015, and the Ninth Circuit ruled for Nike in February 2018, finding the images not substantially similar. The mark you are wearing has been litigated and upheld.
Two recipes. First, sand or khaki chinos with a white shirt, a warm tonal fit where the dune panels tie to the trouser and the red reads as a single accent. Second, cream trousers with a rust or brick knit, pulling the red upward so the shoe looks part of a considered palette rather than an afterthought. This is a smart casual pair: it will pass in most offices and every dinner. Mids want a hem at or above the collar, so cuff once. Treat before first wear, brush dust off weekly, and keep the white midsole edge clean since it discolours before the upper does.
The Air Jordan 1 became a cultural object through Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising, with Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and through hip hop, where 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referenced Jordan and his sneakers. What kept it there is that the brand kept issuing versions like this one, softened palettes for people who want the silhouette without the team reference. Since 1997 the line has run as Jordan Brand, a standalone division inside Nike with its own roster, apparel and collaboration programme, which is what funds a colour range this wide.
Three warm tones on a Mid is a balancing act the 1's panel structure handles easily. White carries the base, dune warms the overlays, and red appears in the smallest area, which is why the shoe reads soft rather than sporty. The Mid collar closes above the ankle, giving the dune tone a defined zone rather than letting it run up the leg. Warm neutrals are more forgiving than cool ones in dusty conditions, since dust reads as tone rather than as dirt, but the white base still marks. Protect the whole upper before first wear, clean the white the same day it takes a mark, and keep the pair out of standing water.
