Designed by Peter Moore and released on 12 May 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has the White/White/White colourway. Triple White on a Mid is the Air Jordan 1 at its most neutral, and it carries a quiet irony. The shoe's most famous story is about a league uniform policy that required footwear to be at least 51 percent white, a rule Nike turned into the Banned campaign by paying the fine rather than redesigning anything. Run the whole upper in white and the shoe would have passed without an argument. What you get instead is the 1985 panel structure by Peter Moore rendered as pure form: the wing shaped eyestay, the long Swoosh, the collar step, all visible only through seams and shadow. The Mid collar keeps enough height for the outline to stay recognisable from across a street.
Two directions. Summer weight: ecru linen trousers, a white tee, a tan belt, letting the shoe finish an all light outfit without a single hard edge. Or high contrast: black denim, a black tee and a leather jacket, where the white shoe is the only bright object and the whole look sharpens because of it. Good for daytime, weddings you are attending rather than hosting, and anywhere a coloured sneaker would be too much. Size true to length. Protect before first wear, wipe the midsole with a magic sponge, and avoid dark raw denim in the first weeks since indigo transfer onto white leather is stubborn.
All white Jordans are the version that escaped sneaker culture into general wardrobes, which is a bigger achievement than it sounds for a shoe whose reputation was built on transgression. The Banned campaign taught the market that breaking a rule sells, and the hip hop record, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z naming Jordans, kept the shoe culturally loaded. A blank white pair inherits all of that recognition without asking you to participate in any of it. It is also the pair most likely to be worn by someone who has no interest in the resale market the Air Jordan 1 created.
A single white across leather panels turns this into a study in surface. Smooth leather on the quarter, the perforated toe box and the padded collar all reflect light slightly differently, and that is the only contrast the shoe offers. The midsole is white foam over a white rubber outsole, so there is no visual break anywhere in the stack, which makes the shoe look taller and cleaner than a two tone pair. The trade is obvious: nothing hides. Creases across the toe box show as grey lines, and the midsole picks up transfer from dark denim. Regular light cleaning beats occasional deep cleaning, because white leather holds a stain once it settles in.
