Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 28 November 2016 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Black-White-Varsity Royal-Varsity Red. Top 3 is a mashup: the colour codes of the earliest Jordan 1 releases pulled into one shoe, so a single pair carries several of the combinations that made the model famous in its first year. It is a collector's idea executed as a general release, and in boys grade school sizing it becomes a history lesson worn to school. The pattern is the Retro High OG, which follows the 1985 shape closely, the shoe Nike produced for Michael Jordan in November 1984 and put on sale on 1 April 1985. Wearing three eras at once only works because the original blocking is so recognisable that each borrowed panel is legible on sight.
With a multi colour upper, everything else should be plain. Black jeans and a white tee is the correct answer, and a grey hoodie is the only layer it needs. For a slightly smarter version, dark navy trousers and a plain crewneck keeps the shoe as the only busy element. Never add a patterned garment. Buy with a thumb of growing room and keep the collar laced snug so the heel stays locked. Clean the white midsole weekly with a sponge, brush the panels dry, and store with paper in the toe so the shape holds through a full school year.
The early colourways this shoe quotes are the ones that built the myth. Nike's Banned advertising was constructed around the league's uniform rule, which required shoes to be at least 51 percent white, and the shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype worn before the Air Jordan I released, with Nike paying a 5,000 dollar per game fine rather than redesigning anything. That taught the market that transgression sells. Hip hop did the rest, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z putting the shoe in their records, and Top 3 packages all of it into one pair.
The High OG build gives it a tall collar with the Wings mark, layered panels rather than printed colour, a padded tongue and a flat rubber cupsole. On a mashup colourway, the panel edges are doing all of the storytelling, so this is a pair where alignment and stitch quality are the visible craft. There is no visible Air unit in this pattern, as that technology entered the line from the Air Jordan II. Multiple colours across one upper means multiple maintenance needs: keep the lighter panels clean with a damp cloth, sponge the midsole weekly, and avoid strong cleaners that can lift one colour while leaving another untouched.
