Culture Note™
Deep royal blue is one of the oldest colours in the line, and Rare Air is a naming convention that admits what the whole catalogue now trades on: scarcity as a feature. The commercial logic goes back to the beginning. Nike signed a Chicago Bulls rookie in October 1984 on a six year, 2.5 million dollar deal, roughly three times any other contract in the league, and unusually gave him a royalty on sales, which means every pair sold since has paid the athlete directly. Under that arrangement a reported 150 to 256 million dollars flowed to Jordan in 2022 alone. A deep royal Retro High OG is that machine still running on its founding palette.
Recipe one: mid grey wool trousers with a navy crewneck and a charcoal overcoat, using the royal as the single saturated point at the ankle. Recipe two: black denim, a white tee and a royal blue accented cap, a direct and deliberately simple reading. This is an autumn to spring shoe, comfortable once broken in, and the high collar works best with a full length or slightly stacked trouser. Fit runs true for most, half up for wide feet. Wear dark socks for the first outings while the dye settles, clean with mild soap and minimal water, keep them out of prolonged sun, and store cool and dry, since ageing midsole materials degrade over time.
Jordan Brand generated about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike in 2022, which makes it larger than most standalone sportswear companies, though it has always been a division rather than a separate business. Royal has stayed in rotation across that entire growth because it is one of the original colour ideas, cool where Chicago is hot. The line's cultural transmission ran through hip hop and film, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing Jordan and his sneakers, and Spike Lee playing Mars Blackmon in Nike's advertising. Blue pairs sit slightly outside that canon, which is why they age better in a wardrobe.
The Retro High OG is the original arrangement: toe cap, eyestay, quarter and heel cut as separate leather panels and stitched over one another on a foam midsole, a rubber outsole with the pivot circle at the forefoot, and the Wings logo, the mark from the earliest era of the line, on the tall collar. Deep royal against white or black gives hard panel edges, so the shoe stays graphic at distance. Saturated blue leather is the colour most likely to transfer onto pale socks in the first few wears and most likely to fade in strong sun. The high collar and firm heel counter take a fortnight of wear before they stop pressing on the ankle.
