    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 2 October 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/Neutral Grey. The '85 in this name is doing real work. It marks the shape as the original proportions, the ones Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore before the Air Jordan 1 reached the public on 1 April 1985, rather than the modern retro pattern most pairs are built to. Metallic Black takes that shape and gives it a finish the 1985 shoe never had, which is the interesting tension here: archive geometry, contemporary surface. It also sits in the black and metallic register that the line has returned to repeatedly, a long way from a team colourway and much closer to how the model actually gets worn now, as a considered object rather than court equipment.
Metallic wants restraint. Recipe one: black tailored trousers, a black knit, and the shoe is the only reflective thing in the outfit, which is a genuinely strong evening look. Recipe two: dark indigo jeans, a grey sweatshirt, a black bomber, keeping it casual while the finish carries the interest. Avoid other metallics in the same fit. The '85 shape runs slightly narrower than the modern retro pattern for some feet, so try before committing or size half up if you are wide. Store in the box away from direct sun, use shoe trees, and wipe after every wear: on a metallic surface, dust dulls the effect long before dirt marks it.
The Air Jordan 1 built sneaker collecting into a mass activity, and the '85 and OG designations are how the brand speaks directly to that audience. Original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the resale market anchored by this model is valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. The Banned campaign, built on the NBA's 51 percent white rule and a 5,000 dollar per game fine that Nike paid rather than redesign, taught the market that transgression sells. Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising and hip hop references from 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z did the rest.
OG and '85 designations describe tooling, not marketing: wing panel placement, Swoosh length and overall panel proportion follow the original pattern, which is why these sit and crease differently from a standard retro. The Low cut brings the collar below the ankle. Metallic finishes behave differently from plain leather: they reflect rather than absorb light, so scuffs read as dull patches instead of scratches, and they do not take conditioner the way smooth leather does. Style code FB9933 102 identifies this pair. Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap only, and keep abrasive brushes away from the metallic panels, because once the finish is scratched through it will not polish back.
