Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 21 December 2012 as part of the Air Jordan 11 line. This release has the Black/Varsity Red-White colourway. The Air Jordan 11 is the model that put patent leather on a basketball court, and Bred is its black and red arrangement, the one people mean when they say the 11 is a formal shoe. This 2012 retro is from the period when the brand had fully understood what it had: a Tinker Hatfield design from the run that began with the Air Jordan III, when Nike handed him the line and he turned a signature shoe into a design series with its own vocabulary. Patent leather was the boldest single material decision in that vocabulary, because it brought a formal wear surface into performance basketball and never went back.
This is the rare sneaker that genuinely works with tailoring. Black tapered trousers with a black knit or a slim overcoat is the intended look, and the patent panel does the same job a polished shoe would. The second recipe is dark denim with a black bomber, keeping it casual while the gloss still reads as dressed up. Avoid anything distressed or heavily worn, which fights the shine. The 11 fits close through the midfoot, so try before committing to your usual size. Wipe patent leather with a soft dry cloth only, keep it away from anything abrasive since scratches in patent cannot be buffed out, and store it upright and shaped.
The 11 is the reason people wear basketball shoes with suits. Patent leather brought formal material into a performance product, and the culture read it immediately: Air Jordan reached the mainstream through basketball meeting hip hop, with rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing Jordan and his sneakers. The line created sneaker collecting as a mass activity, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the resale market valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. Bred on the 11 sits at the top of that market's hierarchy, black and red being effectively brand colours alongside the number 23, inherited from the Chicago Bulls.
Patent leather is the defining material here, first used on the Air Jordan XI, and it changes everything about how the shoe behaves: it wraps the lower upper in a hard, glossy shell that resists creasing, holds its shape and reflects light in a way no matte leather can. The line also introduced carbon fibre shank plates for torsional stiffness, which is what stops a shoe this tall from twisting underfoot. Nike Air cushioning has been in the series since the Air Jordan II. One honest caution on a retro of this age: polyurethane midsoles degrade over time by hydrolysis and Nike has not published which polyurethane it uses, so a long stored pair is not automatically safe to play in.
