Released on 14 September 2022 and part of Nike's Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT% 2 line. This release has a flyknit upper in Total Orange/Bright Crimson/Ghost Green/Black. Total Orange is a race shoe wearing its intent on the outside. The Alphafly sits at the marathon end of the family Nike opened in 2017 with the Vaporfly, which combined ZoomX, an altered Pebax foam that is the lightest and most responsive in the range, with a full length carbon fibre plate designed to add spring to every step, and which peer research found could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent. This is the second edition of that marathon specific shoe in a single saturated orange, the colour Nike reserves for start lines and television cameras. There is no half measure in the design or in the colouring, which is the honest signal: this is equipment, not a sneaker.
Save it for the days that count. Recipe one: race day over the half or full marathon, worn with split shorts, a singlet and thin socks, laced firmly since a thin upper needs the lace to do the holding. Recipe two: two or three race pace sessions in the weeks before, so your calves adapt to the plate rather than meeting it fresh on the morning. Total Orange makes you visible in a crowded field and in photographs, which is part of why racers pick it. Size with a thumbnail of toe room and no more. Never machine wash, never dry in direct heat, keep the foam off gravel and kerbs, and store the shoe flat rather than crushed in a kit bag.
The plated racing era is the most consequential thing Nike has done to a sport since it started sponsoring athletes. Its running lineage runs from Steve Prefontaine, the first track endorser and the brand's symbol of running as attitude, through sponsored athletes including Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix. What changed with the carbon plate was the argument itself: rather than banning the technology, the sport wrote limits around it and required it to be available to everyone. A bright orange marathon shoe on an amateur runner at a city start line is the visible result of that decision.
Racing construction removes everything that is not propulsion. The upper is thin and breathable because it only needs to hold your foot for a couple of hours, and almost all of the material budget goes into the midsole, where ZoomX foam and a carbon plate work together to return energy rather than absorb it. Know the rules that shape this category: World Athletics set limits on 31 January 2020 capping sole thickness at 40mm with one rigid plate and requiring general retail availability, and compliant models in this line remain legal for competition. No stack figure or weight is published to you here, and no style code is given, so verify the exact version at purchase. Expect a short usable life measured in races rather than months.
