The Harden line is adidas basketball's longest-running modern signature project, built around a player whose game is footwork, hesitation and contact rather than vertical spectacle. Volume 9 continues that brief, and the Metamorphosis Pack frames it as change rather than iteration, a themed grouping released together rather than as a single colourway. adidas has been designing around individual athletes since Adi Dassler made event-specific spikes in Herzogenaurach, watching competitors instead of guessing at them, and a signature basketball shoe is the same discipline scaled up.
On court, lace tight through the top eyelet and use a cushioned crew sock, since guard shoes are built for lockdown and lose their braking advantage if the foot slides. Off court, two easy routes: black or charcoal tapered sweats with a plain hoodie, letting the shoe's shape do the talking, or loose straight denim with a team-adjacent jersey or long sleeve for a full basketball read. Rotate pairs if you play more than twice a week, since the cushioning recovers between sessions.
James Harden is adidas's signature basketball athlete, which places this shoe in a lineage that runs back to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and George Gervin popularising the Superstar's shell toe on NBA floors. Basketball has always been adidas's most direct route into American culture, and the brand's second and larger route came without payment: Run-DMC recorded My Adidas in 1986, held their shell toes up at Madison Square Garden that July, and the endorsement deal that followed was the first between a musical act and an athletic company. Signature basketball shoes still live in the gap between those two worlds, judged on court by players and off it by everyone else.
A signature guard shoe is designed around stopping, not just running: a broad outsole footprint for lateral braking, a supportive midfoot to resist rollover on hesitation moves, and a cushioned forefoot for repeated contact.
