    Culture Note™

Released on 16 August 2022 and part of Nike's Zoom Fly 5 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Ale Brown/Racer Blue/Phantom. A.I.R is Nike's artist led take on the race shoe, where designers and artists are handed a performance silhouette and told to treat it as a surface. Hola Lou's Zoom Fly 5 belongs to that project, which places it at an unusual junction: a training day shoe from the marathon family, decorated by someone from outside the running industry. The Zoom Fly line sits directly beneath the Vaporfly, the 2017 shoe that paired ZoomX foam with a full length carbon fibre plate and produced marathon improvements peer research measured at up to 4.2 percent. Taking the more affordable, more durable member of that family and making it into an art object is a smarter choice than decorating a shoe nobody trains in.
Training first: pair with plain black shorts or tights and an unbranded tee, because a graphic race adjacent shoe needs quiet kit to avoid looking like a costume. Second, off duty: straight leg grey or black sweatpants cropped at the ankle with a plain hoodie, where the artwork becomes the only pattern in the fit. Use it for tempo runs, long runs and interval sessions rather than easy recovery mileage, since the plate wants pace to feel right. Size to your normal Nike running length, snug but with the toes clear. Hand wash only with cool water and a soft brush, dry away from heat, and avoid solvents which will lift printed artwork off the upper.
Nike has always understood that running is watched as much as it is done, an idea that goes back to Steve Prefontaine, the first track athlete the company endorsed and the runner who made the sport look like attitude rather than exercise. The A.I.R project extends that by handing performance product to artists, which is a more collaborative version of a relationship Nike has sometimes got wrong: its unauthorised 1987 use of the Beatles' Revolution ended in a lawsuit and pulled ads in March 1988, and Nike SB's 2005 appropriation of Minor Threat artwork drew a public rebuke and an apology. Crediting the artist on the shoe is the corrected version of that instinct.
The Zoom Fly is the plated trainer of the family, built to be worn far more often than a race shoe. It uses ZoomX, Nike's altered Pebax foam and the most responsive compound in its range, with a full length plate running through the midsole to stiffen the roll from midfoot to toe, and a firmer, more durable setup than the pure racing models so it survives repeated sessions. The upper is a light engineered weave, and on an A.I.R pair the artwork is carried in the print and colour placement rather than in added layers, keeping the weight honest. Graphic uppers show wear at flex points first, so expect the toe crease area to age fastest.
