Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 September 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Medium Olive/White. Black Toe is one of the original colour arrangements in the 1's language: a dark toe cap set against a lighter base with the heel picking up the same dark tone. Medium Olive replaces the red that usually completes it, which drags the whole shoe out of Chicago and into a military palette. The line exists because Nike, losing basketball to Converse and adidas, signed a rookie on 26 October 1984 and let Peter Moore draw a shoe around him with Bruce Kilgore. That shoe reached the public on 1 April 1985 and sold out 50,000 pairs. On the Low, Black Toe blocking is compressed into a smaller canvas, so the toe cap becomes the dominant feature instead of one element among many.
Olive is a neutral that behaves like a colour. First recipe: black or charcoal trousers with a cream knit, the shoe supplying the only warmth. Second: raw indigo denim with a white tee and a tan jacket, which puts the olive in conversation with the tan instead of fighting it. Skip navy above it, the two tones muddy each other. Good for autumn, travel and city days, less suited to rain because the collar is open. Size as you would any Jordan 1 Low. Brush the olive leather dry rather than wet where possible, use a mild cleaner on the black toe separately so no dye lifts, and keep the pair out of prolonged sun which fades olive faster than black.
The 1 built sneaker collecting into a mass activity and anchors a resale market valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, with 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars. Its cultural entry was through hip hop and Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising, with Lee on screen as Mars Blackmon. Earth toned versions like this one are how the model kept working after that story was told: they let people who do not care about the archive buy the shape anyway. Olive is the least sneakerhead colour the 1 offers, and wearing it is a way of using the silhouette rather than displaying it.
Panelled leather with the collar cut away, so the toe cap, eyestay and heel counter are the visible architecture. Olive is an unusual tone in leather because it shifts under different light, reading brown indoors and green outside, which makes the black toe cap a stabiliser: it fixes the eye somewhere neutral. Rubber outsole with the forefoot pivot circle. A Low takes more abuse at the midsole edge than a High does, so that white or off white line is where scuffs will collect first. The leather will crease across the toe box early, and on an olive panel those creases can look lighter than the surrounding surface until the shoe settles.
