Culture Note™
Alternate Bred rearranges the most loaded palette in the line. Black, red and white are effectively Jordan Brand's house colours, carried over from the Chicago Bulls, and Bred is the arrangement everyone can picture without being shown. This Mid moves the black and the fire red into new positions, so the shoe is instantly familiar and slightly wrong at the same time, which is the entire appeal. The parent silhouette was drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984 for six years and about 2.5 million dollars with a royalty on sales. Red and black have carried that story since the beginning, and the Mid is where the brand keeps rewriting the sentence.
Bred is the easiest palette in sneakers to style badly, because everything matches. Anchor it: black straight leg denim, a white tee and a black jacket, letting the red be the only warm note in the fit. The second option is grey, a full grey sweatsuit with the shoe as the only hard colour, which keeps the red from shouting. Do not add a second red item unless you want the outfit to read as a uniform. Fit runs long and narrow, so consider a half size down. Wipe the red panels dry rather than wet, since red dye is the most likely in this palette to bleed onto white leather, and never store the pair damp.
Black and red is the palette the Banned advertising was built on. The NBA uniform rule required shoes to be at least 51 percent white and carried a 5,000 dollar per game fine, and Nike chose to pay rather than redesign, building a campaign out of the conflict. The shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Michael Jordan wore before the Air Jordan 1 released, but the lesson stuck: transgression sells. Spike Lee directed the early advertising as Mars Blackmon, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z pulled the shoes into music. Any Bred variant is trading on that, which is why an alternate arrangement still lands without a single word of explanation.
The Air Jordan 1 sits before the Nike Air cushioning that entered the line with the Air Jordan II, so this rides on a rubber cupsole and firm foam, close to the ground and stiff at first. The Mid collar closes around the ankle without reaching the height of the High OG, which makes it faster to get in and out of and easier under a trouser hem. Black panels hide creasing and scuffs better than any other finish in the line, while the fire red will be the first area to look faded if the pair lives in sunlight. The white sections between them are your wear indicator: when they grey, the whole shoe reads tired even if the leather is fine.
