Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 20 December 2022 as part of Nike's Air Max 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Anthracite/Honeydew/Black/Kumquat/Honeydew. Anthracite and honeydew is an odd, good pairing: a near black grey against a pale green that most brands would not put next to it. The Air Max 1 can carry it because the silhouette was built to show you something. The Air Max line arrived in 1987 and did what no running shoe had done before, which was cut a window into the midsole so you could see the pressurised gas unit that Nike had been sealing inside its shoes. That turned cushioning itself into a design feature and gave the company a visual language it has used ever since. A Premium execution in an unusual colour pairing is that idea used for taste rather than for proof.
Two ways to wear the pairing. First, lean into the grey: charcoal trousers, a black tee and a grey overshirt, letting the honeydew be the single unexpected note in the outfit. Second, run it warm: olive fatigues, a white tee and a cream jacket, where the pale green ties into the olive and the anthracite grounds it. Air Max 1s are best treated as walking and standing shoes rather than as running shoes now. Size true, with a low volume fit through the midfoot. Pale green marks easily, so clean it with mild soap and a soft brush, and keep the visible air window free of grit because scratches on it never come out.
Air Max belongs to the small group of Nike models, alongside Air Jordans and Air Force 1s, that stopped being sports equipment and became clothing. From the 1980s onward those shoes turned into status objects in urban and hip hop fashion, then into staples of mainstream American youth dress, then into the backbone of 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. The Air Max 1 sits at the head of that, because it was the shoe that made the air unit visible in the first place. Nike's voice through the same period came from Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988 and later held in the Smithsonian, and it is why a running shoe from that era still reads as culture.
Nike Air is a pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole, and on the Air Max 1 it is deliberately visible at the heel rather than hidden. Everything above it is panel work: the upper is layered in overlays across a base, which is what allows a two tone scheme like anthracite over honeydew to read as blocks rather than as a gradient. Premium in a Nike name generally signals upgraded upper materials over the standard release, so expect the panel finishes to be richer than a general release version of the same shape. This listing carries no style code, so check the box label and size tag against the colourway before buying. The sole is cut for road running geometry, not court.
