Origin
Released on 29 January 2025 and part of the ReactX Rejuven8 line. This release has a reactx upper in Smoke Grey/Smoke Grey/Smoke Grey. ReactX is the foam platform this shoe is named for, and Rejuven8 is the part of Nike's range aimed at the hours around training rather than the training itself: getting to the gym, standing about afterwards, walking on tired legs. That is a category Nike could only build once it had spent decades convincing people that what goes under your foot is an engineering question. The line runs from Bill Bowerman ruining his wife's waffle iron in pursuit of a lighter sole to Nike Air sealing pressurised gas into a midsole in 1987 to ZoomX, the altered Pebax foam that made the Vaporfly possible. Smoke Grey is the colour that lets all of that stay quiet.
Utility
Two ways to use it. Straight after a run or a gym session, with a loose sock, when your feet want volume and softness instead of a locked fit. Or as the shoe for a long airport and travel day, worn with joggers and a light overshirt, because the soft platform holds up better across hours of standing than a flat court sole does. Smoke Grey sits under black, navy, olive and washed denim without argument. Size true, allowing for a slightly roomier fit than a running shoe. For care, wipe the foam midsole with a damp cloth rather than scrubbing, keep it out of the machine, and dry it in shade because heat is what actually kills a foam platform.
Influence
Nike's running authority came from athletes: Steve Prefontaine as the first track endorser, with a statue at the Beaverton headquarters, then a long roster including Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Allyson Felix. What changed everything downstream was the 2017 Vaporfly, which paired ZoomX with a full length carbon fibre plate and produced research showing marathon improvements of up to 4.2 percent, and pushed World Athletics to write shoe rules on 31 January 2020. Once foam became the argument at the elite end, foam became the selling point everywhere else too. Recovery shoes are the most everyday consequence of that shift.
Construction
Smoke Grey is a mid tone neutral, which on a foam heavy shoe is a practical choice as much as an aesthetic one: it hides the road film that pale midsoles collect and it does not show the shine that black synthetics develop with wear. The shape of a recovery leaning shoe is the opposite of a race shoe, with a taller, softer platform and an upper built for easy entry rather than for lockdown. Nike's Dri-FIT fabric platform runs across this part of the range to move sweat away from the skin. Expect a soft, rolling feel underfoot and a fit that is more forgiving than a trainer, which is the entire brief.
