Released on 19 November 2022 and part of On Running's Cloud 5 line. This release has a mesh upper in Pearl/White. The Cloud is On's original everyday shape, the model that carries the company's founding argument in its least dramatic form. That argument was made in 2010 in Zurich by Olivier Bernhard with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti: hollow sections glued to a sole to prove that a shape, not a slab of material, could cushion a landing and then firm up for the push off. The fifth generation is the version most people meet first, and Pearl White strips it back further still. A single soft off white across upper and sole makes the pods read as relief rather than contrast, which is the most honest way to look at a Cloud. It is a quiet shoe that is still, structurally, an argument.
Pearl White wants clean lines around it. Recipe one, the summer default: ecru wide leg trousers, a white tee with some weight to it, a linen shirt worn open, no visible sock. Recipe two, the smart neutral: mid grey suit trousers, a fine navy knit, low white socks, so the shoe reads considered rather than sporty in an office that allows it. This is a low stack everyday shape, good for long walking days, commuting and travel, less suited to hard training miles. Size true and expect a snug midfoot. Protect it early with a spray, wipe after every few wears, and use a soft brush inside the pods, because grit in a white cavity is what ages this colourway first.
On went from garden hose prototype to about 6,000 retailers across 55 countries by 2019, holding roughly 40 percent of the Swiss running shoe market, then listed on the New York Stock Exchange in September 2021 under the ticker ONON. The Cloud, in plain white, is the shoe that did most of that quiet work, sitting under commuters and hospital shifts rather than on a start line. The lifestyle turn came separately: Roger Federer took an equity stake in November 2019 and put his name on The Roger in July 2020. On remains a young company of about fifteen years and roughly 2 percent of global athletic footwear, so this is not heritage, it is a fast argument that won.
CloudTec is a geometry rather than a cushioning compound: foam engineered into pods with specific cavities so the sole compresses in more than one direction and supports the foot laterally as well as underneath. The Cloud silhouette applies that at a lower, lighter volume than the max cushion models, so the shoe stays close to the ground and easy to walk in. Pearl White is unforgiving in the way all pale shoes are, and the open cavities will hold dust, which is the trade you make for the look. Nothing about this is Swiss made. On designs in Zurich and manufactures in Indonesia and Vietnam, a distinction the brand is straightforward about and worth keeping straight.
