Onitsuka Tiger MEXICO 66 SLIP-ON (PINK/WHITE)
Onitsuka Tiger MEXICO 66 SLIP-ON (PINK/WHITE)
Culture Note™️ / ملاحظة الثقافة
Origin
Released on 20 May 2024 and part of the Mexico 66 line. This release has a konbu upper in Pink/White. The slip on takes the Mexico 66 outline and removes the lacing, which is a more radical edit than it sounds. Everything that made the 1966 original recognisable stays: the slim toe, the low flat profile, the crossed Tiger Stripes across the quarter that were first used on the Mexico line built ahead of the 1968 Mexico City Games. What goes is the eyestay and the throat, replaced by an elasticated opening you step into. In Pink and White, that simplification is amplified. There is nothing to look at except the shape and the stripe, rendered in a soft pink against white, so the shoe becomes almost a graphic outline of itself.
Utility
Two recipes. First, cropped white wide leg trousers with a grey marl tee, where the pink reads as a soft accent and the missing laces keep the ankle line clean. Second, a light blue denim skirt with a white shirt tucked in, a simple summer fit that lets the shoe's silhouette do the talking. This is a warm weather and travel shoe above all, since you can get in and out of it without bending down, which makes airports easy. Size carefully, ideally trying before buying, because there is no lacing to adjust. Protect the pink before first wear and clean marks off the same day.
Influence
Since the early 2020s the Mexico 66 family has been back at the centre of sneaker culture, driven by the wider move away from chunky sneakers toward slim, low profile silhouettes and pushed by celebrity wear and younger shoppers. The slip on is the most fashion led branch of that revival, a version that only makes sense for a label that was rebuilt in 2002 as fashion rather than sport. Onitsuka Tiger sits separately from Asics Tiger and Asics Sportstyle, which are different lines, and the slip on is a good illustration of the split: no performance brand would delete the lacing from its most famous flat.
Construction
Without laces the fit is fixed, so the shoe relies on the elastic gore at the throat and on the narrow last to hold your foot. That makes correct sizing more important here than on the laced version, because you cannot tighten anything later. The Tiger Stripes still run as panel overlays across the quarter, doing structural duty on a shoe that has lost the lacing as a source of support. The profile stays low and the sole stays thin, so ground feel is the same. Pink on white is the least forgiving finish combination in the line, showing marks at the toe and along the sole edge almost immediately.
