Part of On Running's Cloud 5 line. This release has a mesh upper in Nimbus/Alloy. Nimbus is a cloud name given to a Cloud shoe, which is the kind of tidy loop this brand enjoys. Every On model is a Cloud something, and that naming system is a house device as deliberate as the visible pods. The Cloud 5 is the generation that made the range familiar, the everyday model descended from the 2012 Cloudracer that Swiss triathlete Nicola Spirig raced, and this women's build keeps the fit close and the volume low. Behind it sits a company founded in Zurich in 2010 by Olivier Bernhard with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti, whose founding experiment involved a garden hose, a sole and a question about hollow shapes.
A soft grey everyday shoe is a base layer for the rest of your clothes. Recipe one: black cropped leggings, a white tee and a grey oversized shirt, a light build where the shoe disappears into the palette on purpose. Recipe two: straight blue jeans, a navy sweater and a white cap, where the nimbus tone keeps the outfit from going heavy. Use them for walking, easy runs, commuting and long days on your feet, not for trail or wet unpaved ground. Fit true to size, snug through the midfoot. Air them between wears, brush the sole dry, and clear the pod cavities weekly so the ride stays responsive.
On is a young company that behaves like an established one, in about 6,000 retailers across 55 countries by 2019 and listed on the NYSE by September 2021. The Cloud 5 is the model that did the volume. Its cultural meaning is not street credibility but Swiss engineering worn openly, an idea that widened enormously once Roger Federer became a shareholder in November 2019 and The Roger arrived in July 2020. The tennis roster that followed, including Iga Swiatek from March 2023, kept the brand in mainstream sport while shoes like this quietly became the default trainer in a lot of wardrobes.
The pods along the outsole are the reason the shoe exists. On engineers foam into specialised geometries so the cavities compress horizontally as well as vertically, absorbing impact and supporting the foot in multiple directions rather than a single plane of give. That is what produces the soft landing and firm push off the company was built to deliver, and on the Cloud 5 it comes in a light, quick chassis rather than a maximal one. Grey toned colourways like this are the sensible middle: they keep the cavity shapes readable, they take city dust without looking neglected, and they clean back up with a dry brush and a little foam cleaner.
