Culture Note™
Released on 1 February 2023 and part of adidas's Gazelle line. This release has a suede upper in Supplier Colour/Cloud White/Core Black. The Gazelle 85 is the version of the Gazelle built to the proportions of a specific moment in adidas' history rather than to a modern reissue standard, and orange is the colour that suits that era best. A full orange suede upper is not a neutral, it is a decision, and it belongs to a time when sports shoes were made in team colours and nobody worried whether they matched the rest of a wardrobe. The Trefoil that marks this range was designed in 1971 and launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics, which is the visual world this shoe still lives in.
Orange demands neutrals. Wear it with washed indigo denim and a cream sweatshirt so the shoe is the only saturated element, or with olive trousers and a black tee where the two colours sit in the same warm register without repeating. Avoid red or pink anywhere in the outfit. The slim build fits well under tapered and cropped hems. Sizing runs narrow, so those with wide feet should consider a half up. Spray before first wear, brush after each wear, never use water, and keep the shoe out of direct sun during storage since strong colour suede fades where the light hits it.
Originals exists because adidas' sport shoes were adopted by people who had no interest in the sport. The Superstar and the Stan Smith became the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing, and slim suede silhouettes travelled the same road, which is why a shoe designed for the gym now reads as a music and subculture object. That transfer was never engineered by the company. It happened around the brand, most visibly when Run-DMC wrote My Adidas unpaid in 1986, and adidas has spent decades since learning to follow it.
Suede across the whole upper in a saturated orange, with contrast Three Stripes stitched down the quarter and a T shaped toe reinforcement, on a low rubber outsole. The Gazelle is one of adidas' slimmest silhouettes, so there is very little between your foot and the pavement, and it fits close through the midfoot with a narrow toe. Bright suede is the most fragile finish the brand sells: it water spots on contact, it fades in strong sun, and the nap flattens permanently where the toe creases. Sprayed before first wear and brushed regularly, orange suede holds its intensity for years. Neglected, it goes dull and patchy fast.
