Culture Note™
Released on 25 January 2025 and part of the Harden Vol. 9 line. This release has a synthetic upper in Cyber Metallic/Core Black/Lucid Red. adidas has been in basketball since before the sport had a shoe culture. The Superstar arrived in 1969 with a rubber shell toe designed to protect players' feet under the basket, and by 1973 it was reportedly worn by more than 75 percent of NBA players. The Harden line is the modern continuation of that court presence, built with James Harden as adidas's signature basketball athlete. Vol. 9 in Cyber Metallic is the loudest treatment the model gets: a metallic, almost liquid finish that catches arena light and reads very differently on court than it does in a photograph. It is a shoe designed to be seen at speed under bright lights.
Two ways. Full court kit, shorts and a jersey, where the metallic finish does what it was designed to do under indoor lighting. Or off court with black tapered trousers and a plain heavy tee, letting the shoe be the only reflective object in the outfit. Play in it before you decide how it feels, because a basketball fit is snugger through the midfoot than a running fit. Size true and lace high for lateral support. Wipe the outsole before every session so it grips, clean the metallic upper with a soft dry cloth, and avoid soaking it. Keep a dedicated indoor pair if you play regularly, since outdoor courts shred a basketball outsole fast.
Signature basketball shoes are the closest thing modern sport has to a personal signature, and adidas has invested in that lane with Harden as its signature athlete alongside a wider roster that has included Lionel Messi and David Beckham in football. The lineage matters here: the shell-toe Superstar's court dominance is what gave adidas the standing to run a signature line at all, and the fact that hip hop later adopted that shoe without being asked is why an adidas basketball model carries cultural weight as well as technical credibility.
A supportive basketball build with a reinforced midfoot, a wrapped heel for lateral hold and a cushioned midsole tuned for repeated hard landings. The metallic upper treatment sits over the structural panels rather than replacing them, so the shine is a surface rather than a compromise. Basketball footwear has to control the foot sideways as much as forwards, which is why the lacing runs high and the collar is built up. adidas has used the Three Stripes as a structural element since it began stitching them on to reinforce uppers, and on a court shoe that logic still shows in where the support panels sit. Wear with proper basketball socks and lace to the top eyelet.
