Released on 15 October 2023 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Core Black/Cloud White/Clear Granite. Black Samba OGs solve a problem the white pairs create: they go everywhere, including the places where a bright shoe is wrong. This women's pair pairs a black leather body with Clear Granite, a pale grey that lands on the stripes and toe rather than shouting from the sidewall. The result is a Samba that reads almost formal at distance. The silhouette comes out of the same tradition as everything Adolf Dassler built in Herzogenaurach after registering adidas AG in 1949: one shape, one job, refined rather than replaced. The colour is what updates it, and grey on black is a subtler update than most.
Two recipes. Black straight-leg trousers with a grey knit and a long coat, where the shoe reads as part of a tailored outfit rather than a sports shoe worn with one. Or dark denim with an oversized white shirt, letting the Clear Granite stripes echo the shirt rather than the jeans. It is the strongest Samba colourway for office-adjacent dress codes and rainy-season city wear. Size true; the last runs narrow. Wipe the leather with a damp cloth, brush the suede toe dry, condition the black occasionally so it does not go grey, and let gum soles clean up with water alone.
The Samba's rise was not driven by a campaign. It was driven by the same mechanism that has repeatedly caught adidas by surprise, where people outside sport pick a shoe up and decide what it means. adidas Originals became the base layer of European casual dressing exactly that way. A black and grey pair is the version bought by people who wear the shoe daily rather than photograph it, because it survives commutes, weather and repetition without looking tired. Black on grey is also the version that ages best in a wardrobe, because it never announces which season it arrived in and never needs replacing for looking dated.
Leather quarters with a suede overlay across the forefoot, three stitched stripes in pale grey and a gum-family rubber outsole. The stripes are structural in origin, added to hold the upper in shape long before they became a logo, which is why they sit precisely over the flex point. Black leather is the most forgiving Samba material: it hides scuffs, takes a polish and creases into character rather than damage. The Clear Granite toe will show wear faster than the rest, so that panel is the one to maintain. Low profile underfoot, narrow last, and a break-in of a few wears before the leather settles around your foot.
