Origin
Designed by Kanye West and released on 28 August 2023 as part of the Yeezy 700 V3 line. This release has a mesh upper in Azael/Azael/Azael. Azael opened the 700 V3, which released on 23 December 2019 and looked nothing like the runner shaped 700s before it. Where the Wave Runner from 12 August 2017 borrowed from nineties running design, the V3 went alien: a smooth shell wrapped in a caged outer structure, closer to automotive design than to athletics. Azael is the pale, near white launch colourway, which shows that structure at its clearest because there is no dark tone to hide the cage inside. The name follows the line's habit of using invented, biblical sounding words for its later releases rather than material names. adidas terminated the Yeezy partnership on 25 October 2022, so this is archive rather than current product.
Utility
A pale sculptural shoe needs simple, wide clothing. Recipe one: black or grey wide leg technical trousers with a cropped windbreaker, so the volume of the shoe balances the volume above it. Recipe two: light grey sweatpants with a white tee and a heavy overshirt, keeping the whole outfit pale so the cage detailing reads as texture rather than as a separate object. Avoid slim tapered trousers, which make the sole look bolted on. Take your usual size and expect a closed, snug fit through the forefoot. The pale finish marks easily on the cage edges, so clean with a soft brush and foam cleaner, work into the gaps with a toothbrush, and air dry indoors away from sunlight.
Influence
The 700 V3 is where Yeezy stopped referencing running shoes altogether. By the time it landed the line had already made drop culture mainstream, with limited releases feeding queue culture, bot buying and a resale economy, and the brand had enough authority that a genuinely strange silhouette could sell on its own terms. That confidence is the interesting part: no logo, no heritage cue, just an unfamiliar shape. Kanye West founded and designed the line, and adidas ended the partnership on 25 October 2022 after his antisemitic public remarks, described by the company as unacceptable, hateful and dangerous. The V3 remains one of the more divisive designs of that period, which is usually a sign it mattered.
Construction
The V3 is built around a moulded outer cage that wraps a smooth inner shell, so the upper reads as two layers working against each other rather than as knit and overlays. There are no visible logos, which on a shape this unusual makes the silhouette carry the whole identity. The lacing is minimal and sits low, letting the cage structure define the profile instead of a traditional lace panel. In a pale colourway the shadows between cage and shell do the visual work, so the shoe looks different under every light. The sole unit is chunky and slab like in keeping with the model, and the overall build is heavier and more enclosed than a knit 350, so it wears warmer.
