Designed by Kanye West and released on 28 October 2022 as part of the Yeezy Basketball line. This release has a primeknit upper in Onyx/Onyx/Onyx. The Basketball Knit is the line's attempt to take its sock like construction onto a court silhouette, giving the knit language a higher collar, a wider base and a more aggressive stance than the running derived models it grew from. Onyx is its all black treatment, a stone name that fits squarely in the vocabulary the label has used since Pirate Black and Moonrock, where the colour is described by the material it resembles rather than by a fashion term. Monochrome is the natural home for this shape: with no visible logo anywhere on the shoe, a single dark tone forces you to read the silhouette, which is exactly how the whole catalogue was designed to work.
All black on a high volume knit shoe is easy to wear and hard to overdo. Recipe one: black wide leg trousers with the hem breaking over the collar and a black hoodie, a tonal fit where the shoe's stance is the only shape statement. Recipe two: dark indigo denim, a grey crewneck and a black bomber, where the shoe reads sporty without dragging the outfit into gym territory. Skip loud socks; a plain black crew keeps the line unbroken. Take your usual size and expect the knit to compress rather than stretch out. Brush the knit dry after each wear, spot clean with cold water and a soft brush, and never machine wash a knit and moulded sole build.
This model comes from the late stretch of the adidas era, when the design language had moved on from the earth toned knit runners that made the line famous and was pushing into new silhouettes. Behind it sat a release culture the brand invented, where limited quantities, queue culture, bot buying and a resale market made each launch an event, and a business that was generating roughly two billion dollars a year for adidas at its height. That partnership was terminated on 25 October 2022 after antisemitic public remarks by founder Kanye West, so the basketball direction never got the runway that the 350 and 700 did.
The upper is a knit built to wrap the foot with a raised collar for ankle coverage, giving the shoe a sock like entry rather than a structured leather build. That knit is set on a moulded sole unit with a wider, flatter footprint than the running influenced models, which is what gives the shape its court stance. The all black finish means the knit texture and the sole geometry carry all the visual information, since there is no colour blocking to break the surface. Expect a close, compressive fit through the midfoot and an easy pull on entry, with no cage or overlay adding rigidity to the upper.
