Origin
Designed by Kanye West and released on 13 June 2022 as part of the Yeezy Boost 700 line. This release has a nylon upper in Phosphor/Phosphor/Phosphor. The 700 family started as a deliberately clumsy nineties runner tribute with the Wave Runner on 12 August 2017, all layered panels and dusty colour blocking. The MNVN went the other way. It reduced the same chunky proportions to a stripped, moulded shape and then removed the laces entirely, so the shoe closes with a strap system instead of a traditional lace panel. Phosphor takes that reduced form and floods it in a sharp yellow green, which is about as far from the original Oxford Tan and Turtle Dove palette as the line ever travelled. adidas terminated the Yeezy partnership on 25 October 2022, so a laceless 700 like this is archive stock rather than something still being produced.
Utility
Neon needs discipline elsewhere. Recipe one: black cargo trousers, a black hoodie and nothing else bright, so the shoe is the single point of colour and the outfit stays legible. Recipe two: grey sweatpants with a white tee and a black shell jacket, where the phosphor tone works like a highlighter against a neutral base. Do not pair with other saturated colours. Because there are no laces, try the fit before committing if you have a high instep, and expect a firm pull on entry. Bright synthetic uppers show grime at the creases first, so wipe them down with a damp cloth after wear, use a mild foam cleaner on marks, avoid bleach which will dull the tone, and air dry indoors.
Influence
The 700 line is where Yeezy proved the drop model could work on a shape most people initially disliked. Chunky, heavy and unbranded, it sold out anyway, because by then the release mechanic mattered as much as the design: limited numbers, announced dates, queue culture, bots and a resale economy sitting on top. A laceless neon version is that confidence pushed to its limit, a shoe with no logo, no laces and no interest in blending in. Kanye West founded and designed Yeezy, and adidas ended the partnership on 25 October 2022 after his antisemitic public remarks, which the company described as unacceptable, hateful and dangerous.
Construction
Laceless means the fit is set by the upper itself, so the shoe is designed to be pulled on and held by tension across the instep rather than tightened by hand. That changes how you buy it: there is no adjustment to compensate for a narrow or high foot. The upper is a moulded, structured build rather than a soft knit, which is why the shape holds even when the shoe is off the foot, and the midsole keeps the bulky 700 profile that made the family recognisable in the first place. There is no logo on the exterior. In a single bright tone the panelling and moulding read as shadow lines rather than as separate colours, which is what makes the silhouette look carved.
