Origin
Designed by Kanye West and released on 6 December 2019 as part of the Yeezy Slides line. This release has a rubber upper in Desert Sand/Desert Sand/Desert Sand. Desert Sand is the Slide dressed in the colour the whole line started with. When the adidas partnership delivered its first products in February 2015 the palette was already committed to terrain names, Oxford Tan, Desert Rat, Moonrock, and when the Slide arrived in December 2019 it inherited that vocabulary directly. The model itself was a reduction exercise: one moulded shape, a thick sole, a wide strap over the foot, no laces, no logo, nothing stitched. A warm sand tone suits that better than most, because it makes the object look like it was cast from the ground it walks on. adidas terminated the Yeezy partnership on 25 October 2022, so this is archive stock rather than current product.
Utility
Sand foam wants warm, loose clothing. Recipe one: beige or off white linen shorts with a plain white tee, worn barefoot for hot weather, so the tone continues the skin and fabric palette instead of interrupting it. Recipe two: olive drawstring trousers with a cream tee and short socks, the version that works for an evening walk rather than a poolside. Slides run large and are usually sized down one, with the strap crossing the widest part of the foot without pinching. Good for travel, home, beach and short errands, bad for distance walking and wet polished floors. Rinse in cool water, wipe dry with a cloth, avoid solvents, and keep them out of hot cars where EVA warps.
Influence
The Slide is the Yeezy product that left sneaker culture behind entirely. It crossed into general fashion and was copied across the mass market so thoroughly that a thick moulded slide is now a standard item rather than a specific design, which is the strongest evidence for the anti branding argument the line was built on: no logo, and the shape still got recognised, and then taken. Kanye West founded and designed Yeezy, and adidas terminated the partnership on 25 October 2022 after his antisemitic public remarks, which the company described as unacceptable, hateful and dangerous. The silhouette carried on spreading long after the deal was over.
Construction
The Slide is injection moulded from a single piece of EVA foam, strap and footbed and outsole all formed as one body, which is why there are no seams to fail and why the pair weighs so little in the hand. The footbed has a light texture that stops the foot sliding when it is damp, and the base carries moulded ridges for grip. Warm sand is a middling colour for upkeep: better than the true pale tones, worse than grey, and it will darken slightly at the contact points over a season. Fit is broad through the forefoot with an open heel, and the foam feels firm on first wear before body heat softens it.
