Origin
Designed by Kanye West and released on 4 September 2020 as part of the Yeezy Slides line. This release has a eva upper in Soot/Soot/Soot. When the Slide appeared in December 2019 it was the most reductive thing the label had made: footwear cut down to a single moulded form, no laces, no strap adjustment, no logo, no stitching. Soot is its charcoal, and among the earliest and most requested tones in the range. Read against the vocabulary the line built, Pirate Black, Moonrock, Desert Rat, the name does what all of them do, borrowing from material rather than from colour theory. The design leaves you nothing to look at but proportion: a thick raised sidewall, a steeply banked footbed and a broad band across the toes. That absence of detail is the design, not a shortcut around it.
Utility
Charcoal is neutral enough to wear without thought, which is exactly what a slide should be. Recipe one: black mesh shorts and an oversized grey tee straight out of the gym, where the slide keeps the fit looking chosen rather than thrown on. Recipe two: cream drawstring linen trousers and a black tank in hot weather, with the dark foot grounding a pale outfit. A chunky white crew sock is the standard styling move; barefoot gives you better grip. These run narrow and slightly short, so wider feet should go up a size. Rinse with lukewarm water, scrub the footbed texture with a soft brush, and dry in shade, since heat will permanently deform moulded foam.
Influence
Together with the Foam Runner, the Slide is the product that moved the label out of sneaker culture into general fashion, and its outline was copied so widely across the mass market that the shape stopped being attached to any one brand. That happened during the peak of a release model built on limited quantities, bots, queues and resale, which the line itself made mainstream. adidas terminated the partnership on 25 October 2022, calling comments and actions by founder Kanye West unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, then sold through remaining inventory. Charcoal has always been the most practical tone in the range, and it stayed in demand right through the wind down.
Construction
Everything here is one continuous piece of moulded foam. Footbed, band and outsole come out of the same tool, so there are no glue lines and nothing that can separate over time. The underside carries moulded ridges for traction and the top of the footbed is textured so the foot does not slide forward on the bank. Because the band is fixed, the shoe holds through the shape of the mould rather than through tension, which is why fit is unusually specific to foot volume. Charcoal pigment runs through the material, so scuffs show as dulled patches rather than as chips, and most of them buff back with water and light pressure.
