Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 October 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Royal Blue/Black. Royal is one of the oldest arguments the line ever made. When the Air Jordan 1 arrived publicly on 1 April 1985, the league's uniform policy required shoes to be at least 51 percent white, and a black and coloured shoe was a provocation with a price tag: Nike paid a 5,000 dollar per game fine and built the Banned advertising around it rather than redesign anything. The shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Jordan wore before the 1 released, but the lesson stuck to the whole line. This Low takes the royal blue and black combination and reworks it as a toe block, so the colour sits at the front of the shoe instead of across the quarter.
Recipe one: black wide leg denim, a navy crewneck sweat and a black bomber, keeping everything in the cold half of the spectrum so the royal toe is the only saturated point. Recipe two: light grey sweatpants with a white tee and a royal accented cap, treating the shoe as the anchor of a deliberately simple fit. This is a daily driver: low collar, forgiving with cropped trousers, comfortable across long walking days. Expect a snug toe box, so size a half up if your foot is wide. Clean black leather with a damp cloth and mild soap, keep the blue panels away from strong detergents which can lift colour, and store cool and dry, since ageing midsole materials break down over time.
Royal blue and black is one of the palettes that taught the sneaker market transgression sells, alongside the red and black the Banned campaign made famous. The Air Jordan 1 went on to create sneaker collecting as a mass activity: it anchors a resale market valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, and original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars. The line's cultural carriers were rappers as much as players, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z all name checking Jordan and his shoes. Royal has stayed in rotation for four decades because it is the founding palette's cooler twin.
Moving the blue onto the toe changes how the eye travels across the panel layout. The Air Jordan 1 Low is assembled from separate leather pieces, toe cap, eyestay, quarter and heel, stitched over a foam midsole with a rubber outsole beneath, and an alternate block simply reassigns which of those pieces carries the accent. Practically, that means the deepest colour is on the part of the shoe that creases first and hardest, so this pair will show its wear early and then stop changing. Black leather across the quarter hides scuffing well. The low collar needs no breaking in, and the leather softens across the flex point inside a few weeks of regular use.
