Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 11 April 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Black/Lucky Green/White. This is the grade school cut of the Air Jordan 1 Low, black with Lucky Green, and the GS designation matters more than people assume. Jordan Brand is a standalone Nike division created in 1997 that reached about 5.1 billion dollars in 2022, and a business at that scale reaches younger buyers first through smaller sizing rather than through separate models. Black with green is a harder, more graphic pairing than the white based version of the same colour: the green becomes a cut through darkness rather than an accent on light. The base pattern is unchanged from the shoe Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore, which is why a GS pair carries exactly the same visual authority as an adult one.
Black based shoes are the forgiving ones. First: black or dark denim, a plain tee, a green or grey hood picking up the Swoosh, socks black so nothing breaks the line at the ankle. Second: grey track pants and a white tee, letting the green pop as the single colour in an otherwise washed out fit. Do not add a second bright colour. Practical for school, travel and daily wear, since the black hides road dust and the low collar suits warm weather. Brush before wiping, use foam on the green panels and a black safe conditioner on the leather, avoid solvents, and keep them away from heat so creased panels do not crack.
The Air Jordan 1 became the shoe that turned sneaker collecting into a mass activity, and the darker chapter of that story is documented rather than mythologised: in the late 1980s the shoes were associated with robberies and assaults and some American schools banned them. That history sits behind every generation that has grown up wanting a pair. The lighter side is the one that lasted, from Spike Lee directing Nike's early advertising as Mars Blackmon to 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing Jordan on record. A black and green GS low is the entry point into all of it, at the size where most people meet the silhouette for the first time.
GS pairs use the same panel construction as adult sizing, separated toe, quarter and heel pieces with the low collar, scaled down rather than simplified. Black across the body with green on the Swoosh and heel means the seams disappear into the dark panels and only the green shapes are legible from a distance, the opposite of how a white based pair reads. Nike Air entered the signature line at the Air Jordan 2, so the 1 remains flat and firm underfoot with no cushioning unit, which suits lighter wearers well. Black leather scuffs pale, so the toe box is where wear shows first. The green panels hold their colour better than the black holds its finish.
