    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 July 2025 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/White/Sail/Starfish. Shattered Backboard is one of the few Air Jordan colour stories that comes from an event rather than a kit: black and orange over white, referencing a night when a dunk brought a backboard down. The 2.0 version reworked that palette, and this is the grade school Low, which takes the whole idea and drops it onto the cut of the Air Jordan 1 that has become the default in fashion. The base shape is still the one Peter Moore designed with Bruce Kilgore for Michael Jordan, publicly released on 1 April 1985 after Nike signed him on 26 October 1984. The Low strips the collar away and lets the colour blocking do everything, which suits a palette this graphic.
Two ways to style it. Keep it simple: black jeans or black cargos with a white tee and an orange or black cap, so the shoe's two accent colours are echoed once each. Or go sport: black shorts, a white tee, and low ankle socks, which is how the Low is meant to sit, showing the collar line and the black heel panel. Grade school lengths run shorter than adult numbering, so measure before ordering. Brush the white leather clean early rather than letting the dirt set, wipe the orange with a damp cloth only, and keep the midsole white with a soft brush, since on a low cut shoe the midsole is a much larger part of what people see.
The Air Jordan 1 Low has become the everyday cut of the most collected sneaker ever made, and that collecting culture is not small: original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the resale market the shoe anchors has been valued at roughly two billion dollars. Jordan Brand has grown into that demand, generating about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike in 2022 as a division whose reach now runs well past basketball, into the Michigan Wolverines football programme from 2016 and Paris Saint Germain from 2018. A grade school Low in a story colourway is how that whole system reaches a first time buyer rather than a collector.
A leather upper in white with black and orange blocking, cut low at the collar so the shoe sits below the ankle bone. You still get the perforated toe box, the separate mudguard and eyestay panels and the rubber cupsole with the forefoot pivot circle, just without the padded ankle. Grade school sizing scales the last rather than changing the pattern, so the proportions match the adult Low. The Low creases more visibly across the toe than the High does, because there is no collar holding the foot back, so lace it firmly through the upper eyelets. White leather between the black and orange panels is the surface that will show age first.
