    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 24 May 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Gym Red/Black. Red is the colour this shoe got in trouble for. The league's uniform policy required shoes to be at least 51 percent white, Nike paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine rather than redesign, and the Banned advertising built around that decision taught the sneaker market that transgression sells. Metallic red on a Jordan 1 Mid takes the most loaded colour in the brand and gives it a sheen, which turns a sports reference into something closer to jewellery. The base shape is still the one Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike signed in October 1984, but the finish belongs to a much later idea of what a sneaker is for.
Reflective shoes need flat clothing. Recipe one: black wide leg trousers, a plain black tee, black socks, letting the shoe be the only surface that catches light. Recipe two: raw indigo denim, a white shirt, a black bomber, keeping every other fabric matte. Never pair metallic red with another shiny surface, since two reflective points compete and both lose. Mids look right with a hem sitting at the collar. This is an evening colourway that performs badly in flat daylight and brilliantly under artificial light. Keep the finish away from abrasion, clean only with a soft dry cloth, and store with paper support so flex creases do not set.
This is the palette the brand was built to provoke with. Red, black and white functioned as brand colours from the beginning, tied to Chicago, and the Banned campaign turned a dress code dispute into the founding myth of sneaker culture. Metallic treatments came much later, from an era when the shoe was competing for attention in photographs rather than on a court, and they belong to the same logic as the collaboration programme that runs through Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Supreme, KAWS, Dior and Comme des Garcons. What holds it all together is the Jumpman, the mid leap silhouette Peter Moore had Jordan recreate in Bulls gear.
A metallic finish is the single most demanding surface a sneaker can carry, because it reflects rather than absorbs light and therefore records every crease, scuff and press mark with unusual clarity. The Mid cut keeps a collar at the ankle while sitting below the height of the original pattern, so the reflective panels cover a moderate area and the effect stays controlled. Against white, metallic red reads pink in strong sun and deep crimson indoors. Jordan Brand does not publish a full material sheet per colourway, so establish in hand whether the metallic surface is a coating or a treated leather, since coatings crack along flex points earlier.
