Obsidian is a deep, almost black navy, and it is one of the few tones that can sit on a Retro High OG without ever looking like a costume. The High OG is the original cut, the shoe Peter Moore and Bruce Kilgore drew after Nike signed a rookie on 26 October 1984 and gave him a royalty because it wanted his identity rather than a star's reputation. Nike projected 3 million dollars over three years; the first 50,000 pairs sold out and the shoe passed 150 million. Navy was never part of the Chicago palette that became brand property, which is why Obsidian reads as adult rather than nostalgic: it uses the most recognisable sneaker outline in the world in the least attention seeking way available.
Navy is the easiest High to integrate into real clothes. First recipe: grey flannel trousers, white oxford shirt, navy pulling the outfit together from below, which is as close as a basketball high top gets to smart casual. Second: dark denim with a cream heavy knit and white socks showing, a winter fit that uses the white base as the highlight. Avoid black trousers directly above navy, the tones fight. Suits autumn and winter, city evenings and long walks. Lace fully for support. Clean the white panels separately with mild soap, test cleaners on the navy first, and keep the pair away from radiators, which harden leather.
Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising put the 1 into film language, with Lee as Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z made the shoe a fixture in music. The Banned campaign, built around the league's 51 percent white rule and a 5,000 dollar per game fine Nike paid instead of redesigning, taught the market that transgression sells. Navy is the counterargument inside the same catalogue: proof that the silhouette carries its history even in a colour nobody argued about. That is why it stays in rotation while louder pairs come and go.
