Culture Note™
AllSaints began in 1994 as a wholesale menswear label, selling into Harvey Nichols and Harrods before it ever had a shop of its own. Stuart Trevor and Kait Bolongaro named it after two things at once: his nickname The Saint, taken from his initials, and All Saints Road in Notting Hill where he spent his time. The first standalone store opened on Foubert Place off Carnaby Street on All Saints Day in 1997, and the label traded as AllSaints Spitalfields for years before shortening the name. The Soleil Short Sleeve T-Shirt, product ID M051PC-9913, sits in the graphic line that carries all of that: a plain crew that earns its keep on the print rather than a slogan. Shore blue reads as a washed coastal tone rather than a hard navy.
Two ways to wear the Soleil. First, the intended one: leave it loose over wide or straight leg denim, let the hem sit low, add plain white or off-white sneakers, and let the oversized drape carry the whole outfit. Second, layered under an open overshirt so only the chest logo shows and the back print reveals itself when you move. On fit, this is cut oversized by design, so take your usual size for the intended drape and size down only if you want it closer to the body. Care is non-negotiable if you want the print to last: machine wash inside out, keep the water cool, hang dry, and never put an iron across the puff print. If you buy an AllSaints Soleil t-shirt in India, shore blue is the easier light colourway to keep clean.
AllSaints has spent three decades selling a specific London register, dark, worn-in, slightly gothic, and its graphic tees are where that register is cheapest to buy into. The Soleil is a good example of where the tee sits now. Front and back logo placement is the current shorthand for a piece meant to be seen from any angle, and the cracked puff print is the finish that separates a considered graphic tee from a promotional one, because it reads as texture up close rather than as flat branding. Shore blue softens all of it. It takes a heavily branded, front-and-back logo shirt and pulls it toward something you can wear on a normal weekday without the shirt doing all the talking for you.
The body is 100 percent organic cotton, and on a tee cut this wide that matters twice over. It takes repeat washes without going papery, and it drapes rather than clings once the oversized cut gives it room to hang. The shape is deliberately oversized, wide through the body and dropped through the shoulder, so it falls off the frame instead of tracing it. A crew neckline keeps the finish clean and unfussy. The AllSaints signature logo sits on both the chest and the back, script lettering with the circular emblem, raised in a cracked puff print. That is the detail worth paying for: the ink stands up off the fabric with a deliberately broken, worn-in surface instead of lying flat like a standard screen print. Wash it inside out.
