Culture Note™
Alexandre Mattiussi started AMI in Paris in 2011, at thirty, after years inside the couture houses: Dior Homme's 30 Montaigne menswear line, Givenchy as first assistant on menswear, then Marc Jacobs. He had spent that whole stretch designing clothes he could not afford himself, and AMI was the correction. The name means friend in French and doubles as his initials, which tells you the posture: clothes for people you actually know rather than a runway abstraction. The Ami de Coeur, that small stitched heart with the A running through it, arrived in 2017 and quickly became the house's shorthand. This polo is the idea at its most usable: piqué, a collar, a heart, and nothing else asking for your attention. In blue, under reference E21HJ207.760.
Two ways to wear it. Tucked into pleated cream or stone trousers with loafers and a slim belt, it is the easiest smart-casual answer you own, and the blue stops it feeling like a uniform. Untucked over dark straight-leg denim with clean white leather sneakers, it handles dinner without a shirt's stiffness. The cut is a classic fit, so neither boxy nor slim: take your usual size and let the piqué relax into you, and size up only if you plan to layer it under knitwear. Care is genuinely the whole game with a cotton piqué polo. Wash at 30 degrees, inside out, and hang it to dry rather than tumbling, because heat is what kills a collar. Store it folded rather than on a hanger so the shoulders keep their line.
AMI landed at the exact moment men stopped wanting to look like they were trying. Mattiussi took the ANDAM Fashion Award in 2013, the house joined the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, and by the time the Ami de Coeur heart arrived the brand had a language people could read from ten paces. That is the whole trick of this polo: a luxury piece that never announces its price. AMI's own line is that it blurs casual and chic and chases timeless basics over seasonal novelty, and a blue piqué polo is the purest version of that promise. It reads Parisian rather than logo-driven, which is exactly why it survives offices, dinners and airports without ever changing register.
Piqué is the point. The waffle-textured cotton knit holds its shape through a full day, breathes far better than flat jersey, and gives the polo enough body to sit properly under a jacket instead of clinging. The build is 100 percent cotton, so it softens with every wash rather than pilling into synthetic fuzz, and it is made in Portugal, where the good knitwear mills are. The Ami de Coeur sits embroidered in red at the chest, small enough to read as a detail rather than a logo, with a tonal AMI embroidery at the back neckline. Short sleeves, a buttoned placket, and side slits at the hem so it hangs straight tucked or loose. It washes at 30 degrees.
