Released on 23 February 2024 and part of On Running's Cloudboom Echo 3 line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Flame. Cloudboom is the racing name in On's system, the branch where the company stops arguing about comfort and starts arguing about time. That branch is also where On does its most visible engineering: the Cloudboom Strike LS, built for the 2024 Olympics, uses a robotically applied single filament upper, weighs about 170 grams and cuts a shoe that normally takes 150 to 200 components down to seven. The Echo 3 sits in the same family, and White Flame gives it the colour language racing shoes have always used, a clean base with heat pushed through it. This is the part of the range where a fifteen year old company decided it could out engineer houses four times its age.
Use it narrowly and it will reward you. Session one: a tempo or threshold run in a singlet and split shorts, where a bright race shoe and a firm forward ride suit sustained pace better than easy mileage. Session two: race day at 10K to marathon with thin socks and a heel lock lacing pattern so the foot does not shift late in the effort. Fit is close and race oriented, so size true rather than up, and try it with the socks you will actually race in. Keep total mileage low, never machine wash, wipe the white immediately after use, and rotate to a cushioned trainer for your easy days.
The racing end of On is where its athlete roster does the persuading. The On Athletics Club, coached by Dathan Ritzenhein, is the professional group behind the brand's road and track presence, and the lineage runs back to Nicola Spirig racing the 2012 Cloudracer. In a decade On went from a Swiss curiosity to roughly 6.6 percent of the US performance running category with Hoka as its nearest rival, and the Olympic bobsleigh and race shoe projects are how it proved technical intent. Federer's shareholding from November 2019 gave the brand a lifestyle audience, but a Cloudboom is aimed at the other room entirely, the one where people care what the shoe returns on push off.
White Flame keeps the body bright and runs warm accenting through it, which is a race day convention because it makes the shoe legible at speed and in photographs. Underneath is On's structural approach to cushioning: foam engineered into specialised geometries rather than trusted as a slab, compressing in two directions so impact is absorbed and energy is directed forward rather than sideways. On also names Speedboard and Helion among its technology platforms. Swiss designed out of Zurich, production in Indonesia and Vietnam. A white race shoe is a maintenance commitment: keep it for sessions and race day rather than daily wear, clean marks immediately with a foam cleaner, and store it out of direct sunlight so the bright base does not yellow.
