Released on 20 February 2024 and part of On Running's Cloudventure Peak 3 line. This release has a mesh upper in Undyed/Flame. Cloudventure Peak is the lightest, most aggressive line in On's trail range, and its third generation lands in Undyed Flame. Undyed is the brand's name for a raw, unbleached off white, and Flame is the hot orange run against it, so the shoe reads as workwear canvas with a warning light attached. The company behind it began in Zurich in 2010, when Olivier Bernhard, a Swiss Ironman champion, glued cut garden hose to a sole to test soft landing and hard take off. Nike turned him down, so he built the idea himself with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti, and CloudTec has been the visible signature of everything On has made since.
Undyed and Flame is a high visibility trail palette that still looks good off the hill. Wear it with black trail shorts and an orange or cream technical tee for fast off road efforts, or with washed cargo trousers and a natural coloured hoodie for everyday use. Treat it as a shoe for shorter, sharper trail work and race efforts rather than for all day hiking. Take your usual running size with a small amount of room at the toe for descending, and wear a proper running sock since the fit is close. The undyed upper marks easily, so brush the dirt off dry, clean stains with mild soap and cold water, and air dry in shade.
On came up through endurance sport rather than street culture. The Cloudracer of 2012 was raced by Swiss triathlete Nicola Spirig, the On Athletics Club under coach Dathan Ritzenhein spans track, road and trail, David Kilgore races for the brand, and On built bobsleigh shoes for the 2022 Winter Olympics. That is the world Cloudventure Peak belongs to. The brand's mainstream turn came separately, through Roger Federer's shareholding from November 2019 and The Roger in July 2020, and through tennis signings from March 2023. Undyed Flame sits on the sport side of the divide: bought by people who care what a shoe does on a climb, not what it says in a queue.
A fast trail shoe has to cushion without going soft, and On's answer is geometry. CloudTec engineers foam into specialised shapes rather than relying on the foam alone, so the pods compress both horizontally and vertically and give multi directional support on the sort of angled, unstable landings that broken ground produces. The Undyed upper keeps the colour count low, which puts the Flame accents where the eye needs them, on the branding and the structural lines. Expect a shoe that prioritises ground feel and quickness over deep stack comfort, in line with what the Peak name signals. Designed in Zurich, made in Indonesia and Vietnam, with the pods left visible on purpose.
