Released on 17 April 2025 and part of On Running's Cloudzone line. This release has a mesh upper in Ice/Black. Ice Black is the Cloudzone at its most graphic: a cold pale tone set against black, so the pod structure that defines every On reads like a technical drawing. Where the warmer Cloudzone colourways lean into fashion neutrals, this one leans into the engineering itself, which is the older instinct at this company. On began in Zurich in 2010 when Olivier Bernhard cut a garden hose into sections, glued them to a sole and tested whether a hollow shape could cushion a landing and stiffen for push off. He had shown the idea to Nike and been rejected, so he founded the company with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti, and the visible pods have been the house signature ever since.
High contrast wants a restrained outfit. Recipe one: black tapered trousers, a black tee and a slate grey shell, a monochrome column where only the ice tone breaks through. Recipe two: dark indigo jeans, a white crewneck and a navy overshirt, where the pale sole line answers the tee. These suit city walking, evenings, travel and long standing hours rather than training. Size true to size, keep a thin sock so the collar sits flat, and lace fully through for hold across the midfoot. Clean the ice panels with a soft brush and a mild foam cleaner rather than soaking, and dry them away from direct sun so the pale tone does not yellow.
On's meaning today is a Swiss engineered running shoe worn because it looks engineered. That reading was earned first through endurance sport, from the 2012 Cloudracer that Nicola Spirig raced in through to the On Athletics Club coached by Dathan Ritzenhein, and then through Roger Federer's shareholding from November 2019 and The Roger in July 2020. The lifestyle silhouettes that followed, including the Cloudzone, are where the design object idea gets tested against people who never intend to run. A high contrast icy colourway is the version that keeps the technical language visible instead of softening it into a fashion palette.
On is explicit that CloudTec is not a foam and not a cushioning material: it is a structural system that engineers foam into specialised geometries. The cavities compress horizontally and vertically, absorbing impact and giving multi directional support through the stride, which is the difference between a shoe that squashes and a shoe that guides. An ice against black split makes those cavity edges obvious, which is the honest way to sell a structural sole. For wear, the black sits where daily contact happens and the ice reads as a highlight, so most marking lands on the forgiving tone. Keep the pale sections brushed and the shoe holds its contrast for a long time.
