Designed by Peter Moore and released on 8 October 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in White/Midnight Navy. Navy is the college colour, and the Dunk High is the college shoe. The silhouette's tall collar and blocked panels were made to be read from a distance in a team's colours, which is why the model has always looked most correct in a single deep tone against white rather than in a novelty print. Midnight Navy is that shoe at its most straightforward. Nike's court credentials go deep enough to make this unarguable: it has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017 under a deal signed in June 2015 and extended for twelve more years as announced in October 2024. The Dunk High is where that authority started looking like clothing.
Navy high tops are more formal than they look. Recipe one: grey wool trousers with a white shirt and a navy overshirt, a tonal build where the shoe closes the outfit instead of interrupting it. Recipe two: raw indigo jeans cuffed just above the collar with a cream fisherman knit, a winter look that shows the high top rather than burying it. Keep hems short or the collar is wasted. Good for cold weather, evenings and offices with a relaxed code. Dunk Highs run true but feel tight at the collar for the first week. Clean with foam and a soft brush, protect the white midsole, and keep navy out of long rain exposure so the dye does not lift onto socks.
Nike's relationship with court footwear includes owning the other side of the argument. It bought Converse in 2003 for 309 million dollars, and Converse is now the only major subsidiary it still holds, having sold Cole Haan, Bauer Hockey, Starter and Umbro. That leaves Nike controlling both the canvas basketball shoe that became a century of casual dress and the leather one that replaced it on court. From the 1980s onward its own models, Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max, became staples of mainstream American youth dress, and the Dunk High travelled into that world on the back of college team colours.
The Dunk High's defining element is the collar, which sits above the ankle and takes about a week of wear to soften enough to move naturally. Until then it feels stiffer than a low top, and that is normal rather than a fit problem. Midnight Navy is close enough to black to work as a dark neutral but blue enough to look intentional in daylight, which is the reason navy outlives black on this shape. Underneath is the Dunk chassis with a broad flat forefoot and a rubber tread whose grip first logic traces back to Bowerman's waffle iron. Dark uppers hide dirt, so the maintenance job is the white midsole and the panel edges rather than the body of the shoe.
