Origin
Released on 1 August 2023 and part of the Mexico 66 line. This release has a leather upper in Birch/Carbon. Birch Carbon is the Mexico 66 in greyscale with the warmth left in. Birch is the off white that reads like unbleached paper, and Carbon is a dark, slightly soft grey rather than a hard black, so the crossed stripes sit on the quarter without cutting it in half the way true black does. The silhouette goes back to 1966, when Onitsuka built the Mexico line as a flagship capable of competing with Adidas and Puma, released two years before the 1968 Mexico City Games. This is the version of that shoe you buy when you already own a loud pair and want the one that does not ask anything of the rest of your wardrobe.
Utility
Two recipes. First, mid grey pleated trousers, a Birch coloured knit and a navy field jacket, where the shoe finishes a soft neutral column without a hard break at the ankle. Second, black straight jeans and a charcoal crew sweat, a monochrome fit where the Birch upper is the only lift. Neutral executions like Birch Carbon are the ones that hold value through that cycle, because they are bought for the silhouette rather than for a story. Construction
Slim leather upper, narrow last, low flat profile and a thin cupsole, with the Tiger Stripes stitched across the quarter as structural overlays rather than applied graphics. Carbon grey on a Birch base is the most forgiving contrast the model offers, because grey does not shadow the way black does and Birch is already off white, so light scuffing blends instead of standing out. The toe box will crease within a few wears, which is normal on a leather flat with this little volume. Expect no meaningful cushioning and no arch structure.
