Origin
Released on 6 January 2024 and part of the Mexico 66 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Yellow. Black and yellow is the brand's signature pairing, tied both to the tiger the founder named the company after in 1949 and to the shoe's long history on screen. On the Mexico 66 the combination is at its most legible: a yellow leather body with black crossed stripes running the length of the quarter, black at the heel and along the sole edge, the graphic reading from across a street. The silhouette itself was built in 1966 as a flagship to take on Adidas and Puma before the 1968 Mexico City Games. This colourway is the one people picture when they hear the brand name, and it carries more cultural weight than any other in the line.
Utility
Two recipes. First, plain black track pants with a black tee, letting the yellow do all the work and treating the shoe as the outfit's only statement. Second, dark indigo straight jeans with a black bomber and a white tee, where the yellow reads as a controlled accent rather than a costume. Keep everything else quiet, because this colourway competes with anything patterned. Take your usual size in the narrow, slightly long last. Protect the yellow leather before first wear, wipe it down after every few wears since dust dulls the colour fast, and dry the shoe fully before storing so the black stripes do not bleed.
Influence
This colour code entered popular culture through martial arts and then through cinema quoting martial arts. A yellow and black Onitsuka style shoe appeared in Bruce Lee's Game of Death, released in 1978, and accounts still conflict over which exact model it was, with the film shoe carrying a different stripe pattern from the Mexico 66. In 2003 Uma Thurman wore yellow and black Onitsuka Tiger Tai Chi shoes as The Bride in Kill Bill Volume 1, a direct homage to Lee, and that landed exactly as Asics was reviving the brand as fashion. BAIT and the Bruce Lee estate later collaborated on a 2015 release marking Lee's seventy fifth birthday.
Construction
The classic build: leather upper over a narrow last, slim toe, low flat profile and a thin cupsole with no lift. The Tiger Stripes here are stitched overlay panels in black across a yellow quarter, so the highest contrast part of the shoe is also the part doing the structural work. Yellow leather is a difficult surface, because it shows both dirt and shadow, and the black stripes will transfer slightly onto the yellow if the shoe stays damp. Underfoot you get ground feel and flexibility rather than cushioning. It is a shoe for walking cities in, not for standing on concrete all day, and it breaks in within a week.
