    Culture Note™️

    Origin

    chevron
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 18 September 2023 as part of Nike's Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Varsity Red/White/Black. Nike was Blue Ribbon Sports first, founded in Eugene in 1964 to import Onitsuka Tiger running shoes that Phil Knight sold out of his car at track meets. The Swoosh only arrived in 1971. By the time the company signed Michael Jordan in 1984 it already held roughly half the US athletic shoe market, and the Air Jordan 1 turned one basketball contract into a business of its own. Bred Toe takes the black and red the line was built on, adds the white that separates them, and reshuffles the blocking so the toe reads in the opposite colour to the quarter panel. This is the low cut, dropped below the ankle for street use rather than the court, in grade school sizing under style code 553560 161.

    Utility

    chevron
Black, red and white sit hard against denim, so keep the rest flat: raw indigo straight leg with a slight break over the collar, a plain white tee, a black bomber. For a sharper version, go monochrome black from the waist up, cropped trousers with visible ankle, and let the red toe be the only colour in the outfit. Grade school sizing runs snug through the midfoot, so size with a thumb of room and lace through the top eyelet if the heel slips. Wipe the white panels with a damp cloth the same day marks appear, since red dye transfer from wet denim is the real risk. Keep them off wet streets and let leather dry away from direct heat.

    Influence

    chevron
The Air Jordan story is inseparable from the advertising Spike Lee directed as Mars Blackmon, which pulled the shoe out of basketball and into hip hop and mainstream American youth dress. One correction worth carrying: the shoe cited under the NBA's uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship prototype, not the Air Jordan 1, and Nike paid the fines and built its Banned campaign on the noise. Black and red is the colourway that entire myth attaches to, which is why Bred variants keep returning. Wearing the low version is a quieter read on the same story, less costume, more everyday.

    Construction

    chevron
Leather carries the whole shoe, cut into the panel map the Air Jordan 1 has used since the start: a stitched Swoosh across the quarter, a separate toe box with perforations for airflow, a collar and heel counter picked out in a third colour so the blocking stays legible from a distance. Underneath sits a rubber cupsole with the pivot circle at the forefoot. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed inside the midsole, works out of sight here; the window that lets you see the air came later with the 1987 Air Max. On a grade school last the proportions are tighter, so the colour split looks sharper than it does on adult sizing.
