Sunset Haze puts warm citrus and white on the low cut version of the shoe that changed Nike's business. In 1984 the company signed Michael Jordan, and what began as an endorsement became a brand of its own, built entirely around one player. The Air Jordan 1 is the origin point of that line, and the Low is the version that stripped the ankle away and let the panel blocking do the talking. Nike had only been Nike since 1972, when the Blue Ribbon Sports importing years ended and the company started selling shoes it had designed itself, so the Jordan signing landed on a young brand that was still deciding what it was. Sunset Haze reads as the softer, warmer register of that story.
Two ways to run it. First, cream wide leg trousers, a white tee and a rust or tobacco knit, pulling the citrus out through the top half so the shoe stops being the only warm thing. Second, mid wash denim shorts, a white polo and a light grey crew, which is the warm weather version and lets the haze tone sit against skin and denim. This is a walking and daily shoe: low collar, flat ride, easy on and off. Size true to your usual Jordan 1 fit. Pale uppers with a warm accent stain unevenly, so clean the white and the citrus separately with a soft brush and mild soap, and never soak the whole shoe to fix one mark.
The Jordan advertising that Spike Lee directed, in which he appeared as Mars Blackmon, made this silhouette the shoe of basketball and, through basketball, of hip hop. It is worth correcting the story that follows it around: the shoe cited under the NBA's uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship, not the Air Jordan 1, and Nike paid the fines and built a campaign out of it. What is true is that Air Jordans became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s on, then a staple of mainstream American youth dress. A citrus and white Low is the friendly end of that history, the version that no longer has to argue for itself.
The Air Jordan 1 Low is a panelled build: toe, eyestay, quarter and heel are cut as separate pieces, and a colourway like Sunset Haze exists because those pieces can each take a different tone. That is why the citrus reads as an accent rather than a wash, and why the white carries the volume. A low collar means the shoe flexes at the ankle immediately, with no break in period at the top, though the midfoot still needs a few wears to settle. Nike Air cushioning sits sealed inside the midsole rather than exposed at the wall, so the ride is firm and flat rather than bouncy.
